About

Picture
Pilates V studio stands for keeping Joseph Pilates’ original method and philosophy alive. All our classes and programs aim to reflect the goals and intentions of Joe and Clara Pilates’. The genius of the method is in the order of the mat and reformer flows. He takes you on the perfect progression to get the most out of your body during and post workout. It reveals and corrects the imbalances of body movement patterns and increases body awareness.

In his book Return to Life through Contrology, Joseph Pilates presents his method as the art of controlled movements, which should look and feel like a workout (not a therapy) when properly manifested. If practiced with consistency, Pilates improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates' system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginner to advanced. At Pilates V we think of our practice as corrective exercise or conditioning to improve body function, relieve pain and increase vitality.

Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany, in 1880. A sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, he dedicated his entire life to becoming physically stronger. Joe studied body building and gymnastics and by the age of 14 was fit enough to pose for anatomical charts. In 1912 he moved to England earning a living as a boxer, circus performer and self-defense trainer. During World War I he was interned with other German citizens in a camp near Lancaster where he trained other inmates in fitness and exercises.

It was here that the beginnings of the True Pilates Method began to take shape. After the War, Pilates emigrated to the United States. On the ship to America he met his future wife Clara. The couple founded a studio in New York City and directly taught and supervised their students well into the 1960’s. Pilates and his method, which he and Clara called “Contrology”, soon established a following in the dance and the performing arts community. From their point of view, “Contrology” is the complete coordination of the body, mind and spirit.

In 2011 while muscle imbalance and chronic pain curtailed her activities, Vannesa Storie discovered Pilates, which relieved her pain, and improved her connection to her body. Vannesa fell in love with this intelligent and challenging form of body conditioning, so she began to learn and train as much as she could.

Since delving into Pilates and completing teacher training, Vannesa has had the pleasure of attending advanced training workshops with Authentic Pilates Masters including Kathi Ross-Nash, Mari Winsor, Jay Grimes, Siri Galliano, along with additional instruction from Moses Urbano, Chris Robinson, Greg Norris. As a Pilates instructor she has the rare ability to recognize muscle imbalances and correct body movement patterns to increase strength, mobility, alignment and control.

Vannesa excels in assisting clients who are recovering from injury or need assistance as their bodies change with age. Vannesa is always craving a deeper understanding of the method and loves learning as much as she loves teaching. Vannesa’s jovial lifestyle translates and you will never leave her class without a smile on your face.
